Summary
Initially composed of 10,000 NFTs corresponding to 10,000 unique paintings, The Currency asked the question, thanks to the participation of thousands of collectors: what is more valuable, the physical or digital work of art? ? Collectors had to decide if they wanted to keep their NFT or exchange it for its physical equivalent. Once traded, NFTs were metaphorically burned. Likewise, the remaining paintings at the end of the project, in July 2022, will be destroyed. On the day of The Currency's announcement, a moderated Discord channel was launched. The enthusiasm and dedication of members of this community has developed a culture around The Currency. This vibrant community of thousands of members worldwide shared their thoughts and experience with the project. These personal, organic accounts are the "Chronicles" that form the backbone of this book. This tight-knit and supportive community debates the fundamental question of values and beliefs, while sharing moving personal accounts of life experiences, holiday stories, charity fundraisers, and memes of Elmo. The "Chronicles" are a varied account of La Monnaie's impact on the life of this community and the friendships and bonds it has created. The project has spanned 6 years and culminates in an installation at London's Newport Street Gallery where the discarded physical paintings will be burned. This is the first volume, The Currency and Discord community is very active. The next steps will be celebrated in future volumes.
