What Is the Booker Prize?
The Booker Prize is awarded annually to the best original novel written in English and published in the United Kingdom or Ireland. It is judged by a panel of literary experts, and the winner receives £50,000 — but beyond the money, the prize carries enormous cultural weight. A Booker win or shortlisting typically sends a novel to the top of bestseller lists overnight and introduces readers to writers they might never have encountered otherwise.

In an age of infinite content and shortening attention spans, the Booker Prize does something vital: it makes the case for the long-form novel as the supreme art form. The Booker Prize archive is a treasure trove of the finest fiction of the last five decades — from Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children to Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall trilogy.
The BBC's coverage of this year's announcement gives a great overview of the judges' thinking and the themes that unite this year's 2026 shortlist.
